How to Get Around
Getting around Melbourne is easy thanks to a well run train, bus and tram service. Melbourne also has a good taxi service and an easy to navigate city which is laid out in a grid one mile (1.6 km) long and half a mile (805m) wide once known as the Golden Mile. The city is forever changing with new hubs springing up like Federation Square, the new Docklands precinct, New Quay and the Southbank precinct which stretches along the Yarra River.

When it comes to getting around Victoria, due to its network of first-class highways connecting the state's cities and towns as well as interstate locations means it is easy to reach your destination by car, motor bike or bicycle. V/Line, Victoria's state run train and bus network can get you to most intrastate towns while scheduled flights service regional centres and interstate cities. It really is that easy to get around. Make sure you visit the Melbourne Visitor Centre before you go anywhere to book your train, bus or tram trip. There you may also wish to look at Melbourne accommodation or Victorian accommodation options which can save you a lot of time when on the road.
Most visitor's to Melbourne base themselves in the city centre and plan their day out from there. Whether it be a walk down the St Kilda esplanade or a complete Melbourne Day Tour, Melbourne transport is easy to use. Tickets can be purchased at the Melbourne Visitor Centre at Federation Square.
And you say that nothing is free these days! Well this is not the case with the Melbourne City Circle Tram. The distinctive burgundy and gold tram provides a free and convenient way to move around the city and passes a number of sights and attractions including New Quay dining and entertainment precinct. Running along Flinders Street past the Melbourne Visitor Centre and Federation Square, it also meanders along Harbour Esplanade, La Trobe Street and Spring Street. The journey takes approximately 50 minutes all the way around with the service easily used as a hop on, hop off which is handy too. The trams run in both directions every 12 minutes from 10 am - 6 pm seven days a week except Christmas day and Good Friday. During daylight saving hours, the times are extended on Thursday, Friday and Saturday to 9 pm.
Complimenting the Circle Tram is the FREE Melbourne Tourist Shuttle bus that goes to the main tourist sites in the city. You can get on and off as you wish, no ticket needed. Totally free. The buses go every 15 minutes, it's very easy to use, and is complemented with a really good map handout. Information can be found at the Melbourne Visitor Centre.
Don't forget that when you arrive in Melbourne, a great way to get into town or to your hotel is by the Airport Skybus. At around $15.00 one way, it is a quick 25 minute ride and tickets can be purchased out the front of the airport.
